The Capitol Complex
Le Corbusier's concrete acropolis at the city's head: three powers, four monuments, and India's only piece of a global UNESCO listing.
This room’s memory is still to be written. An owner memory of the Capitol, if any (a school trip, a first sight of the Open Hand).
Then & now
The OG move
You cannot wander it. It is a working seat of government, fortified through the 1980s Punjab years, so you see the monuments on a free guided tour: register with photo ID, go in with a guide and an armed escort, no interior photography. Look for the Tower of Shadows, built so not one ray of direct sun enters it from any angle, and the Assembly's ceremonial door, enamelled by Le Corbusier in Paris and flown in.
A fact that reframes it
The Open Hand, the city's emblem, is a 26 m sculpture whose 14 m, ~50-short-ton (about 45-tonne) hand turns in the wind on a ball-bearing shaft. It was finished in 1985, twenty years after Le Corbusier died, so he never saw his own symbol stand.
